A Safe Space for Sinners, Sorcerers, and Seers

The midterms are just past us, my friends, and as I sit in the little cafe near my home and watch the coverage, I am heartened! This is the third election to occur globally in which the grassroots organizers and voter mobilization on the left have opened the way forward. Progress is upon us!

I would like to echo the sentiments of many creators at this moment: things are going to get worse before they get better. There is a lot of work to do, and it is slow and bureaucratic work at best. But for the little guy, those of us at the bottom of the totem pole, the disabled and the disenfranchised, the world is healing. History is being made.

And how better to honor the slow grinding of Time’s millstone than with a little peek at what comes next? I’ve dealt a Cross to predict the course going forward, for myself and those who choose to take hold of this future.

The deck is Kim Krans’ Wild Unknown, a wonderful artist from my hometown– and as we go into the wild unknown, it will be a wonderful companion and guide.

The recent past is represented by the Ace of Wands, reverse- a seized opportunity for self-betterment, potentially soured by how relatively small it seems.

At the center, we have the Four of Cups crossed by the Four of Coins– patience and calm being tempered by wise decisions. These advise that now, it is time to take that small opportunity and build upon it.

The road that runs under us is the Nine of Wands, the ladder on up; potential for growth, progress, and social climbing. Above is the Queen of Coins, which says that our goals, now, should be to nudge resources in the correct direction.

The near future is filled with abundance, connection, and celebration with kin, represented by the ten of cups.

The King of swords, reversed, is a toppled tyrant. The Tower, reversed, is an effort to rebuild, a scramble after the fall. The first belongs to us; the second belongs to the opponent. The Two of wands is simultaneously the Hope and the Fear. It says to do the right thing, and reach out a hand to help our opponent up. To prove that we can do better for them than the tyrants could.

The distant future, represented by a reversed Ten of Swords and Three of Cups, and a Nine of Coins, is clear: stay on guard. There will still be failures. The wounds between people, both allies and enemies, will not vanish immediately, and new ones will be made. But even the reward we eke out, bit by bit, will be enough to turn the tide.

The final card, the Key cut into the deck, is the World. Fulfilment. Completion. A better place. And that Key, as with all, is in our hands. The World is in our hands.

Witches and wizards, sinners by choice, sinners by nature, sinners bright-eyed and blinded; there is hope. We can do this. Let it be swiftly and silently done.
